A Crying Galaxy is a digital motion portrait by Cory Skyler Drouillard that honors Stephen Hawking—the physicist who dared humanity to look beyond. As a teenager, Drouillard was captivated by Hawking’s quest to awaken the world to the realization that we are not alone. That early fascination grew into a vision.
Filmed on a full moon night in Helena, Montana, known as Big Sky Country, this piece was captured over weeks of cinematic patience. A pane of glass, streaked with rainfall, was used to film a luminous sky of stars—forming a moving galaxy that seemed to grieve. Drouillard called it his crying universe. The stars wept, the cosmos listened, and this piece was born.
As the fifteenth and final installment in the Modern Movement Art collection, A Crying Galaxy is a visual requiem. It’s not just a tribute—it’s an elegy in motion for the cosmic voice who translated black holes into beauty, and the silence of space into symphonic thought.
